Local Web References

I just read an interesting blogpost on Search Perspective (http://www.searchperspective.com)/ titled, Web Reference Building for Local Business Listings. This article really made me think about this subject. It’s almost as if local business listings need to have popularity, like link popularity. That’s where the web references come into play. However, web references are not links, they just work the same way in that they can be very beneficial when trying to get your listing higher within the local business listings or even in the Google OneBox.

Below are some sites that would be considered a Web Reference for a local business listing:

  • Yahoo! Upcoming
  • Zvents
  • AOL’s When.com
  • Internet Yellow Pages

These are just a few, but it is good to know about web references because now, local business owners can be proactive in getting their local business listing higher in the results.

Local Search- The Evolution of Local Advertising

I just read a very interesting article that pertains, somewhat to local search. It was more about local advertising as a whole.  TMP Directional Marketing’s Gregg Stewart wrote this article for Search Engine Watch. It basically talked about how people searching locally for businesses has changed.

Of course, we know that all of the options we have now for local search, or searching for local businesses didn’t exist in some of the past decades. Since there are so many options now, advertisers have an even harder task of deciding which media source to use and how much budget to allocate to each.

In this article, Gregg Stewart gave some statistics on what sources people use to find local businesses.

  • Online sources - 60% – search engines (30%), IYPs (17%), local search sites (13%)
  • Print Yellow Pages – 33%
  • Directory Assistance – 2%
  • Other – 5%

Pretty interesting statistics. Local search had 13%, which was almost half of search engines. This just shows the growth in local search.

Local Search- Geo-Tagging

I just recently heard about the new geo-tag that can be applied to your web pages that you want found on a local level. This is something that definitely falls witin the realm of local search.  Simply put, geo-tagging is just a way to add geographical meta data to your webpage, RSS feeds, photos, etc. Geo-tags can be added to virtually any content.

A geo-tag will allow you to let your visitors and search engines know which geographical region you are targeting. You have to know the latitude and longitude of your website in order to add geo-tags. There are geo-tag generators that are out there to help you.  Here is an example of one: http://www.geo-tag.de/generator/en.html

For more information on geo-tagging and how to apply this to your online content, visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geotagging
